Sustainability at H+K Strategies, practicing what we preach...

In 2008 we set out a sustainability manifesto to achieve a 20% reduction in our carbon emissions by the end of 2010. Unfortunately we didn’t achieve the target we set, we realise we have a lot more to do. Most of the problems we have are through dealing with an old building from the 1920s and this proving more of a challenge than expected. We’re now spending some time analysing what can be done and will be updating our targets soon, so please check back here for them.

The nature of our business means we don’t actually produce any physical products, however, our main footprint comes from the energy we use and the travel we take and we are constantly looking for ways to reduce this.

Although we are part of the Hill + Knowlton global network we calculate our figures individually from our individual Soho based office with guidance from our parent company WPP (the only marketing services company included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index).

We’re interested in hearing your views on how you think we can reduce our environmental impact, so please get in contact if you wish to discuss.

Highlights to date are;

  • We have been carbon neutral since 2008 through an offsetting arrangement through our parent company WPP and The Carbon Neutral Company
  •  We have moved to 100% recycled paper in our photocopiers and added pull-printing technology to achieve a greater than 50% reduction in paper usage since 2006 (equivalent to 8,000 kilos)
  • We have electricity meters in place showing energy usage per half hour to identify hotspots
  • We have been buying 100% renewable energy since 2008 through Scottish and Southern Energy
  • CO2 from air flights is down 24% from 2007 to 2009 (to be calculated Q1 2011)

...And we are currently defining our commitments for the future (Feb 2011)
