What we’ve been up to this week: 13 January
New year, new resolutions
This year rather than doing the same old new year’s resolutions, we’ve decided to do things a bit differently. This week we launched a campaign with Do Nation, a clever pledging platform all about individuals taking small actions that add up to a greater good. H+Kers are choosing to pledge small sustainable life choice for 2 months, from buying seasonal food to taking the stairs to reading more around their sector. It’s a competition between our sectors, with the team with the most completed pledges per person at the end of the 2 months winning a donation to a charity of their choice. In only 2 days we’ve already had 303 pledges from 76 staffers! See our leader board here: https://www.wearedonation.com/h+k
Breakfast with champions
When 2016 started Helen Richardson-Walsh was recovering from major back surgery. Kate Richardson-Walsh had just been talked out of international retirement. Fast forward 12 months and at the end of 2016 they had made history. Not only as the first same sex married couple to compete at an Olympic games but also as the first same sex couple to both win gold at an Olympics after GB’s scintillating victory in the hockey final. An incredible year was completed when they were recognised in the New Year’s Honours List, with Helen receiving an MBE and Kate an OBE.
On Wednesday morning we were privileged to be joined by Kate and Helen to discuss not only their incredible year and experiences in Rio, but how the GB hockey team came together during a challenging year, using psychological techniques to power the team to an incredible victory. Additionally they talked about how they’ve had to balance hockey with their own careers as elite athletes in a sport that does not make any guarantees financially. Also about their position as role models for inclusivity in sport, and beyond, as they build on their historic achievements.
The Q&A was hosted by the wonderful Eleanor Oldroyd of Radio 5 Live, recent winner of Sports Journalism Awards broadcaster of the year. She chaired the session bringing out the strong partnership between the pair and delving into the incredible determination both Kate and Helen possess.
For our weekly Tech Spec session we were joined by H+K alumnus and now creative strategist at Snapchat, Mark Carroll, to get under the skin of one of the most innovation social media platforms. With the camera and content still very much at its heart, Snapchat now boasts 10 million daily active users in the UK and 2/3 of UK users create content on a daily basis. Mark spoke about how the app has gone from just one function at its launch in 2011 to well over 20 in 2016, including lens, filters, bitmojis and more, and the way in which brands can continue to make the most out of the platform.
