What we’ve been up to this week: 9 September

The British Summer is still clinging on in there and we’ve been relishing the London sun with a fair few sporting activities across the agency, proving that us PR and media types also possess some incredible sporting skills (and modesty!).

Money vs Oil – the rounders match

After years of speculation and debate, our Financial + Professional Services and Energy + Industrials sectors finally held a rounders match so they could remove any doubts and discover which team was best. Armed with a set of rules that changed more times than the topic in long game of Chinese Whispers, they headed to Shoreditch Park to settle the score. There were moments of confusion at points when both teams cheered for what they thought was a decision made in their favour, but both parties played out an exemplary exhibition of one of our nation’s greatest past-times.

E+I chief Simon Whitehead led his troops in stunning fashion, knocking the ball so far away off the pitch that he was able to take his time when passing by the bases. But the hours of hard work and dedication by the FPS team, following an earlier session did pay off, and they won by 1 round. Although the Energy + Industrials dispute the score, claiming that the match ended in a tie, the ability to collaborate across sectors remains a key strength for both teams.

Back of the net

After a flurry of close encounters in recent weeks, H+K London’s football team (also known as “H+Kaos”) signed off the summer season with an emphatic 7-4 victory.

The opposition was a fierce group of technical players with one major flaw: their players did not like to pass the ball. H+Kaos exploited this to take a quick 3-0 lead in the first half. This was thanks to some sustained “carnival football” from Joe McNamara, Chris Pratt and James Waller, redolent of a Barcelona training session.

H+K’s opposition fought back bravely in the second half with a series of individual goals. Vinay Chhana also completed his hat-trick in the second half. At one point, the score stood at 6-4. Thanks to some inspired last-ditch goalkeeping from Josh Glendinning, H+Kaos kept the opposition at bay. Josh pushed around five of the opposition’s efforts onto the crossbar and saved plenty more long-range efforts.

H+Kaos rode the storm, finishing the match at 7-4 with some calm possession football.

The team are now in the midst of a gruelling pre-season training programme for the autumn season. They are also open to guest appearances from members from other H+K offices.

Learning beyond the classroom

This week our FPS team have been making sure we never slip up on our science homework again.

Science is a subject we all took at school, but how easy do we find it now? New research from our client, E.ON, found that two in five parents don’t feel confident in their ability to help with their children’s homework – and less than a quarter think they’d be able to pass GCSE Physics and Chemistry. So, we teamed up with former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Kate Bellingham (photo below), to launch E.ON Energises Anything - a new range of online resources designed to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning beyond the classroom.

14 broadcast interviews took place, including coverage on the BBC and London Live, hitting a total reach of over 2.6 million viewers and listeners. Step-up to STEM yourself and read Kate Bellingham’s blog post about the campaign here.

Female Tribes

On Wednesday morning we were joined by Rachel Pashley, Group Planning Head at JWT, as part of our HER series of talks.

She spoke about how women have conquered stereotypes over the last 100 years, and even though they are continuing to push boundaries and open people’s eyes to the power of femininity (e.g. such as the powerful #LikeaGirl campaign), there are still major challenges. With increased emotional intelligence and self-evaluation compared to men, women in the workplace can be incredibly valuable assets. Read more about her work, Female Tribes here.

Best Social Media Tool

The week ended on a high when we found that we has been nominated for Best Social Media Tool for our bespoke influencer mapping tool Sherlock+ at the UK Social Media Communications Awards. We'll be dusting off our tuxes and evening dresses hoping to bring home an award at the ceremony in November. We'll keep you posted!
